The Investment Solutions Group is an investment-management team within Brown Advisory that specializes in asset allocation, manager selection, hedge funds and other alternative investment strategies. Dedicated to open-architecture solutions, our team has established a strong track record of identifying high-quality, third-party investment managers across the hedge fund, long-only and private equity universes. We leverage this expertise to help clients assemble portfolios that we believe best fit their needs and goals, offering clients a range of solutions from complete portfolio management to fulfillment of specific hedge-fund and alternative-asset mandates.

Founded in June 2002, the Investment Solutions Group now manages in excess of $3.4 billion for clients (data as of January 31, 2017) in a combination of managed accounts, advisory relationships and fund-of-fund offerings.

Private Equity, Real Estate and Energy

Brown Advisory has incorporated private equity and real estate investments in client portfolios since our founding. Today, we can provide that exposure in three distinct ways.

Feeder Funds and Multimanager Funds
We introduce clients to investment opportunities in early- and late-stage venture capital and buyout funds, as well as select real estate funds. We also construct these feeder funds into multimanager funds to make private equity investing as easy as possible for our clients.

Customized Private Equity Portfolios
For most clients, private equity is one component of a balanced portfolio that we manage. Other clients, however, come to us specifically for custom-built private equity and real estate portfolios.

Limited Duration

The Brown Advisory Limited Duration strategy seeks to provide high current income and preservation of principal by investing in a portfolio of short-term fixed income securities.

 

Inside the Strategy

  • Our extensive fundamental analysis seeks to identify each security's potential for income generation and preservation of principal.
  • We believe that sound investment decisions should be based on a security's risk-reward proposition, not macro-oriented forecasts. Our portfolio seeks to perform well in various economic scenarios, with a concentration in positions that have attractive upside greater than downside risk.
  • Our strategy is based on a collaborative, team-oriented investment process, where major portfolio decisions require a consensus of all fixed income team members. This ensures that new ideas are fully vetted and carefully considered from many viewpoints.

Benchmark: Barclays 1-5 Year Government/Credit Index

Objective: High income, preservation of principal

Typical Duration Range: 3.0-5.0 years

Typical Credit Quality: Investment grade

Thomas D.D. Graff Portfolio Manager

Thomas Graff, CFA, is head of Fixed Income. He primarily concentrates on the management and analysis of taxable bond portfolios, including macroeconomic analysis. Prior to joining the firm, he was a managing director at Cavanaugh Capital Management. He served as a portfolio manager and was responsible for trading, analysis and management of taxable fixed income portfolios. Tom is the author of the Compound Interest series available on the Brown Advisory website. He is also a freelance writer for TheStreet.com, offering weekly insight into various fixed income and macroeconomic topics.
