The Investment Solutions Group is an investment-management team within Brown Advisory that specializes in asset allocation, manager selection, hedge funds and other alternative investment strategies. Dedicated to open-architecture solutions, our team has established a strong track record of identifying high-quality, third-party investment managers across the hedge fund, long-only and private equity universes. We leverage this expertise to help clients assemble portfolios that we believe best fit their needs and goals, offering clients a range of solutions from complete portfolio management to fulfillment of specific hedge-fund and alternative-asset mandates.

Founded in June 2002, the Investment Solutions Group now manages in excess of $3.4 billion for clients (data as of January 31, 2017) in a combination of managed accounts, advisory relationships and fund-of-fund offerings.

Private Equity, Real Estate and Energy

Brown Advisory has incorporated private equity and real estate investments in client portfolios since our founding. Today, we can provide that exposure in three distinct ways.

Feeder Funds and Multimanager Funds
We introduce clients to investment opportunities in early- and late-stage venture capital and buyout funds, as well as select real estate funds. We also construct these feeder funds into multimanager funds to make private equity investing as easy as possible for our clients.

Customized Private Equity Portfolios
For most clients, private equity is one component of a balanced portfolio that we manage. Other clients, however, come to us specifically for custom-built private equity and real estate portfolios.

Emerging Markets Small-Cap—Macquarie Investment Mgmt.

The Emerging Markets Small-Cap strategy seeks to achieve total return by investing principally in equity securities issued by small-capitalization companies established or operating in emerging markets.

 

Inside the Strategy

  • The strategy seeks to exploit inefficiencies inherent in emerging markets. Compared to developed markets, many regions in Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East are experiencing above-average economic growth. A number of countries in these regions have low levels of public debt and are investing heavily in infrastructure. This is one of many factors driving rapid urbanization and a growing middle-class emerging-markets consumer, which is creating higher domestic consumption and overall economic growth. We believe that smaller companies with sound business models are best positioned to benefit from higher demand in these regions.
  • We believe that a bottom-up, fundamental approach is critical to generating attractive performance. We seek high-quality companies that offer above-average growth potential that we believe are underappreciated by the market. To identify those opportunities, investment teams must be capable of performing deep analysis of non standardized financial statements and corporate governance practices in order to potentially mitigate inherent risks in emerging markets investing.
  • As the advisor to this multi manager strategy, we seek to partner with investment managers that hold many of the same beliefs we possess. We look for managers with extensive research teams that follow a disciplined, bottom-up, fundamental investment approach. They must generally invest in high-conviction, low-turnover portfolios with a long-term orientation, and must demonstrate a deep knowledge and understanding of local emerging markets where we are invested.
